Montgomery County Man Nearly Falls Victim to $15,000 Jury Duty Scam, Authorities Warn Public
A Montgomery County resident, Steve McCreight, recently came close to losing $15,000 to a sophisticated jury duty scam. Callers, who had spoofed the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office phone number, convinced McCreight that he had missed federal jury duty and faced arrest if he did not pay a fine. The scammers presented what appeared to be legitimate documents, including citations for failing to appear and a forged signature. They directed him to report to the Sheriff's Office but insisted he first clear bonds by making an immediate payment at a kiosk. McCreight grew suspicious and contacted a friend who is a police officer, who immediately identified it as a scam. Despite the friend's advice, the callers continued to pressure McCreight, threatening an active arrest warrant if he hung up. He ultimately did not send any money.
