AI Language Models Retain Western Worldview, Impacting Cultural Understanding
A recent study highlights that while AI language models like ChatGPT can fluently communicate in multiple languages, they often retain a Western cultural perspective. This phenomenon, termed 'epistemological persistence,' was observed when an Indonesian user received advice from ChatGPT that, despite being in perfect Indonesian, was rooted in American cultural values. The AI's response emphasized individual autonomy over the collective family dynamics typical in Indonesian culture. This issue arises because these models are predominantly trained on English-language data, which influences their reasoning processes. Even when AI systems provide grammatically correct responses in various languages, the underlying cultural assumptions remain largely Western.
