American Team Advances Hydrogen Drone Submarine for Military Use
An American team has begun the construction of a hydrogen-powered drone submarine, a significant step in the Pentagon's Combat Autonomous Maritime Platform (CAMP) program. This 8.8-ton, 38-foot-long submarine is designed to travel 3,100 miles underwater and remain submerged for up to 38 days. The initiative is part of a broader effort by the Defense Innovation Unit to explore different propulsion systems for uncrewed submarines, aiming to overcome the limitations of current underwater vehicle capabilities. The program involves multiple teams working on different designs, with Metron's hydrogen fuel cell submarine being one of the frontrunners. This approach marks a departure from traditional military procurement processes, which typically involve selecting a single contractor for development.
