Senator Roger Wicker Advances Maternal Healthcare Initiatives in Mississippi
U.S. Senator Roger Wicker, R-Miss., is actively working to address the high maternal mortality rates in Mississippi, which are among the highest in the United States. Mississippi faces significant challenges in maternal healthcare, with many areas lacking adequate facilities and prenatal care. In response, Senator Wicker has secured funding to establish the Center for Optimizing Maternal Outcomes (COMO) in collaboration with the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC) and the Mississippi Public Health Institute. COMO aims to consolidate healthcare data and coordinate efforts among community leaders to provide support such as transportation, nutrition, and postpartum care. Additionally, Wicker has introduced the Maternal and Infant Syphilis Prevention Act to combat congenital syphilis and the SHINE for Autumn Act to increase research on stillbirths. He also supports the More Opportunities for Moms to Succeed Act, which would create an online resource for mothers.
