Colorado Geographic Naming Advisory Board Faces Challenges in Renaming Pikes Peak
D’Arcy Straub, a former Denver patent attorney, has faced setbacks in his efforts to rename 97 of Colorado's mountains, including Pikes Peak. His proposal to rename Pikes Peak as Fluorite Mountain was rejected by the U.S. Board of Geographic Names due to a lack of local support and consultation with tribal nations. Straub's initiative is part of a broader movement to reconsider geographic names that may be offensive or outdated. The Colorado Geographic Naming Advisory Board, established by Governor Jared Polis, plays a key role in reviewing such proposals. Despite the rejection, Straub remains committed to promoting a new approach to naming peaks, emphasizing themes that endure over time. Another proposal to rename Pikes Peak to Tava Mountain is currently under consideration by the state advisory board.
