Florida Home Insurance Premiums Decline Amid Hurricane Season
The Florida Office of Insurance Regulation has reported a decrease in home insurance premiums across 51 counties during the ongoing 2026 hurricane season. This improvement is attributed to legislative reforms passed in 2022 aimed at stabilizing the state's insurance market. Key changes include reducing frivolous lawsuits, increasing competition among insurers, and lowering reinsurance costs. State Rep. David Smith highlighted that multiple insurers are reducing rates and new companies are entering the market. Mark Friedlander from the Insurance Information Institute noted that fewer lawsuits and reduced fraud have significantly lowered costs for insurers, enabling savings to be passed on to consumers. Despite these positive developments, Florida still has the highest insurance rates in the U.S., with an average annual cost of $6,060 for a home with $300,000 in dwelling coverage.
