Severe Storms, Tornadoes, and Flash Flooding Threaten Eastern US
A multiday severe weather event is intensifying across the eastern United States, with over 116 million people in the threat zone. The system, which began impacting the Upper Midwest on Monday, is now shifting eastward, bringing risks of tornadoes, damaging winds, large hail, and heavy rainfall. The severe weather threat has been upgraded to a Level 3 out of 5 for 35 million people, with another 50 million under a Level 2 threat. The first round of storms is expected to develop Tuesday morning, stretching from eastern Virginia to southern New England, followed by a more intense wave in the afternoon. Flash flooding is a significant concern, particularly in urban areas, as rainfall rates could reach 2.5 inches per hour, exacerbating already saturated ground from recent storms.
