Olathe City Council Approves Rezoning for Sunnybrook Mixed-Use Development
The Olathe City Council has approved the rezoning of 31 acres at College Boulevard and Lone Elm Road for the Sunnybrook development. This mixed-use project in northwest Olathe is slated to include hundreds of apartments, townhomes, restaurants, and will be anchored by a Dillons grocery store. The decision followed a council meeting where city officials addressed various concerns raised by nearby residents. These concerns primarily focused on potential traffic congestion and safety issues, increased noise, lighting impacts, building heights, and the protection of stormwater and stream corridors. Despite these community concerns, Mayor Pro Tem and Ward 2 Councilmember Dean Vakas acknowledged a strong and continued demand for apartment housing in the area, indicating the city's intent to meet this demand. The approval signifies a significant step forward for the development, which aims to provide diverse housing options and commercial amenities to the growing Olathe community.
