FDA Approves Bemotrizinol, First New Sunscreen Ingredient in the U.S. in Decades
The United States has approved bemotrizinol, a new sunscreen ingredient, marking the first such approval in nearly 30 years. Bemotrizinol, known as BEMT, has been used in Europe and Asia but was delayed in the U.S. due to regulatory processes. The FDA's approval follows a congressional mandate to overhaul the sunscreen approval process. BEMT offers broad-spectrum protection against UVA and UVB rays and is expected to be more cosmetically appealing, addressing concerns about chemical sunscreens. The Environmental Working Group and dermatologists have hailed this approval as a significant advancement in sun protection.
