FirstEnergy Foundation Allocates $1.1 Million to Combat Hunger in West Virginia and Maryland
The FirstEnergy Foundation has announced its largest-ever investment in hunger relief, distributing $1.1 million to 43 food banks and pantries across West Virginia and Maryland. This initiative, part of a broader $5 million regional effort supporting 140 hunger relief organizations across six states and Washington, D.C., aims to provide approximately 3.3 million meals in these two states. The grants are being awarded during National Hunger Action Month, observed each September to raise awareness about food insecurity. According to Feeding America, over 1.2 million people in West Virginia and Maryland, including more than 354,000 children, face food insecurity, exacerbated by high food costs and economic pressures. Chris Beam, FirstEnergy's President of West Virginia and Maryland, emphasized the critical role of these organizations in meeting growing needs. The funding will support both established and first-time grant recipients, including major food banks and smaller community pantries.
