Food Labels and Carbon Taxes Could Reduce UK Greenhouse Gas Emissions
Economists suggest that food labeling combined with carbon taxes on high-emission foods could reduce UK greenhouse gas emissions by nearly five percent. A study involving 5,000 UK respondents found that carbon labels decreased the carbon content of food baskets by 5.6%, while a carbon tax on high-emission foods could achieve a 10% reduction. The research indicates that these measures could generate net social benefits and improve public acceptance by redistributing tax revenues to offset inequalities.
