Florida Health Officials Advise Against Psychiatric Medications for Most Children
The Florida Department of Health has issued new guidance recommending that healthcare providers prioritize therapy and lifestyle changes over psychiatric medications for children aged 5 to 17. This guidance, led by Surgeon General Dr. Joseph Ladapo, suggests comprehensive medical and behavioral evaluations before considering medication. The recommendations emphasize examining root causes and environmental factors such as sleep, nutrition, and family stressors. While the guidance is not legally binding, it marks a departure from national public health guidelines, similar to previous instances during the COVID-19 pandemic. The American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry has expressed concerns, stating that medications can be a crucial part of treatment plans when clinically appropriate.
