Cleanup Continues in South Suburbs After August Derecho
Two months after a powerful derecho struck the Chicagoland area on August 11, 2026, cleanup efforts are still underway in the south suburbs. Cook County has allocated over $8 million to remove storm debris and assist more than a dozen affected communities. The storm brought tornadoes, hurricane-force winds, and heavy rainfall, causing widespread damage and power outages across thousands of homes and businesses. Local officials, including Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle, emphasized that the funding will help ease the financial burden of recovery and facilitate necessary repairs. In Lynwood, Illinois, free storm debris removal is being offered through October 16, as residents continue to deal with flooding and property damage.
