OPM Proposes New Rules to Implement Retirement Fix for Injured Federal First Responders
The Office of Personnel Management (OPM) is set to propose new regulations to implement the First Responder Fair RETIRE Act, a law passed in 2022. This legislation addresses retirement benefits for federal first responders who are injured on duty and subsequently forced to take other federal jobs. Traditionally, federal first responders, such as law enforcement officers and firefighters, participate in an accelerated retirement program, allowing them to retire earlier due to the nature of their work. However, if they are injured and unable to continue in their roles, they lose access to this accelerated timeline despite having made higher pension contributions. The proposed rules will allow these individuals to maintain their accelerated retirement benefits even if they transfer to other federal positions.
