Rheinmetall Expands Naval Shipbuilding with Acquisition Plans for German Naval Yards
Rheinmetall, a prominent arms and systems manufacturer, is advancing its naval shipbuilding capabilities by making a non-binding offer to acquire German Naval Yards, based in Kiel, Germany. This move follows Rheinmetall's recent acquisition of Lurssen's naval shipbuilding division, NVL, marking its entry into the shipbuilding sector. The company aims to become a full-service provider for all branches of the armed forces, covering a wide range of naval construction from unmanned vehicles to corvettes and frigates. Rheinmetall is also negotiating with the German defense ministry for the construction of F126 warships, although this project has faced challenges, leading to the cancellation of a previous contract. The acquisition of German Naval Yards is part of Rheinmetall's strategy to capitalize on increased defense spending by European governments.
