Obstetrician Resigns Over Dispute with Medical Association on Gender Treatment Guidelines
Dr. Karla Solheim, a board-certified obstetrician, has resigned from her position as chair of the Iowa section of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG). This decision followed a meeting with an ACOG vice president, where she was given the choice to either resign or stop publicly criticizing ACOG's endorsement of the World Professional Association for Transgender Health's guidelines for transgender medical care. Dr. Solheim expressed concerns about the lack of robust evidence supporting the long-term health benefits of medicalization and surgery for transgender patients, which she felt was not in the best interest of the profession.
