Governor Abbott Appoints Robert S. Howden as Texas Secretary of State to Oversee Elections
Governor Greg Abbott has appointed Robert S. Howden as the 116th Secretary of State of Texas, effective July 18, 2026. Howden, who has served in various capacities under four Republican governors, is expected to bring his extensive experience in legislative processes and public service to the role. As Secretary of State, Howden will act as the Chief Election Officer for Texas, ensuring the uniform application and interpretation of election laws across the state. His responsibilities will also include maintaining official business and commercial records, publishing government rules, and serving as the Senior Advisor and Liaison for Texas Border and Mexican Affairs.
