Aviation Industry Faces Challenges with GPS Interference Affecting Navigation
The aviation industry is increasingly concerned about GPS interference, which can disrupt navigation systems on aircraft. GPS, part of the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS), provides critical location, speed, and time data to aircraft. However, interference through jamming or spoofing can compromise these signals. Jamming involves overwhelming satellite signals with radio frequency interference, causing receivers to lose GPS data. Spoofing, on the other hand, feeds false information to the system, making it appear as though the aircraft is in a different location. Despite these challenges, modern aircraft are equipped with multiple navigation systems, such as inertial navigation and ground-based systems like VHF omnidirectional range (VOR), to ensure continued operation even when GPS is compromised. Air traffic control also plays a vital role in providing additional support during such events.
