These fees, originally linked to fuel costs, have become a general cost-recovery tool for airlines, adding significant amounts to international fares. The call for transparency comes as airlines offer discounted fares to attract cost-conscious travelers, while simultaneously dealing with rising jet fuel costs and economic pressures. In Australia, the issue is particularly relevant as the country is set to introduce Aviation Consumer Protection reforms. These reforms aim to provide passengers with clearer rights and a formal avenue for complaints, including an independent ombudsperson and a Consumer Protections Charter.
