City of Clovis Removes Cooling Center Status from Sierra Vista Mall Amid Persistent Heat Issues
The Sierra Vista Mall in Clovis, California, has been removed from the list of cooling centers by city officials due to ongoing air conditioning issues. Shoppers and employees have reported persistent heat inside the mall, with some areas lacking functional air conditioning for years. The Clovis Community Center will now serve as the cooling center, as it is centrally located and controlled by the city. The decision comes as temperatures inside the mall have reached uncomfortable levels, with readings of 80 degrees recorded. Under state law, employers must implement safety measures to prevent heat illness when temperatures hit 82 degrees. Mall ownership, Mason Asset Management and Namdar Realty Group, has acknowledged the HVAC issues and is working on repairs. Temporary cooling measures have been implemented, but some stores have closed due to extreme heat. The mall's ownership has faced legal challenges in the past regarding maintenance issues at other properties.
