Tularosa Declares Water Emergency as Storage Tanks Reach Critically Low Levels
The village of Tularosa, New Mexico, has declared a state of water emergency due to critically low levels in its two main storage tanks. Mayor Deborah Cooksey announced that the tanks, which supply drinking water to 3,000 residents, have been reduced to just 6 feet of capacity, with sediment further reducing the actual water level. In response, the Village Council has implemented a seven-day ban on outdoor watering and other nonessential water uses. The emergency measures also include urging residents to conserve water by taking shorter showers and only running full loads of laundry and dishes. The village's water supply has been affected by flash flooding upstream, which has introduced debris and mud into the water sources, overwhelming the local filtration system. Despite previous restrictions, noncompliance by residents has exacerbated the situation, leading to the current emergency declaration.
