States Challenge Trump Administration's Medicaid Rule on Transgender Youth Healthcare
At least five U.S. states, including Massachusetts, Maine, Vermont, California, New Mexico, and Maryland, are committing to cover transgender minors' healthcare through Medicaid, despite a new Trump administration rule set to cut federal funding for such treatments. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services finalized a rule in August blocking the use of Medicaid money for gender-affirming care for individuals under 18, effective October. Massachusetts, along with 21 other states, has filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration, asking a Boston federal judge to declare the rule unlawful and prevent its implementation. They argue that the rule infringes upon states' authority to determine their public health insurance coverage. Massachusetts officials have confirmed they will utilize state-allocated funds to ensure continued coverage for gender-affirming care for youth.
