San Francisco Faces Surge in E-Bike and Scooter Injuries Amid Ridership Boom
San Francisco is experiencing a significant increase in injuries related to e-bikes and e-scooters, as reported by doctors at SF General and Kaiser hospitals. The rise in ridership has led to a doubling of such injuries over the past five years, with many incidents involving riders not wearing helmets. Dr. Christopher Colwell, ER chief at SF General, notes that e-bike and scooter injuries are now the second-most-common source of trauma in the city. The surge in injuries coincides with Lyft's expansion of its e-bike fleet, adding hundreds more bikes to the city. The increase in accidents has prompted calls for better regulation and safety measures, as cities across the U.S. grapple with the rapid adoption of micromobility vehicles.
