Lightning Storm Causes Power Outages in South Iceland
A significant lightning storm struck South Iceland, causing widespread power outages. According to the Icelandic Meteorological Office, approximately 3,000 lightning strikes were recorded during the event. The storm's activity was concentrated south of the capital region and over nearby coastal waters. The BúrfellslÃna 1 transmission line, operated by Landsnet, was hit by lightning, leading to electricity disruptions. Areas affected included Mosfellsbær, Landeyjar, VÃk à Mýrdal, Vestmannaeyjar, and Borgarfjörður eystri. Temporary outages also impacted KeflavÃk Airport and the Alþingishúsið, where backup power systems were activated. Thunderstorms are relatively rare in Iceland, with only a few days of such weather typically occurring each year.
