Upon their return, NASA distributed these space-traveled seeds, along with a control group of Earth-bound seeds of the same 'Rutgers California Supreme' variety, to approximately 3.3 million students across 40,000 schools in all 50 U.S. states and 30 other countries. Students were tasked with planting both sets of seeds and meticulously recording observations on germination rates, sprout emergence time, and plant development, including stem length, leaf formation, and fruit production. The collected data, comprising around 8,000 reports, was then sent back to NASA for scientific analysis.
