Yemen Faces Severe Immunization Crisis as Houthi Restrictions Persist
Yemen is experiencing a significant health crisis due to a collapse in immunization coverage, particularly in the northern governorates controlled by the Houthi group. According to data from the World Health Organization and UNICEF, immunization rates for diseases such as measles, polio, and diphtheria are alarmingly low, with coverage at 41%, 46%, and 55% respectively. The inability to conduct mass vaccination campaigns since 2022 has left over 4.5 million children under five unvaccinated or vulnerable to infection. The crisis is exacerbated by restrictions on door-to-door vaccination campaigns and the spread of vaccine misinformation, which have widened the immunity gap and allowed the virus to continue circulating.
