National Digital Identity Systems Face Threats from Deepfake Technology
Deepfake technology is increasingly being used to create synthetic identities, posing a threat to national digital identity systems. These synthetic identities, which combine real and fabricated data, can pass verification checks undetected. The volume of deepfake-generated content has surged, with nearly 8 million files expected by 2025. This rise in synthetic media has enabled criminal networks to launch sophisticated fraud campaigns. In Southeast Asia, deepfake-related fintech fraud has increased significantly, with Indonesia reporting a 1,500% surge between 2022 and 2024. Biometric systems, which are integral to digital identity programs, are vulnerable to presentation and injection attacks.
