IRS Encourages Whistleblowers to Report Fraud at Tax-Exempt Groups
The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has issued a Whistleblower Alert to encourage individuals to report misuse, diversion, or fraudulent use of federal funds by tax-exempt organizations, individuals, and businesses. The IRS Whistleblower Program offers monetary awards of up to 30% of the proceeds collected based on the information provided by whistleblowers. The alert highlights areas of concern such as false statements in grant applications, misuse of federal funds, self-dealing, and other misconduct. IRS CEO Frank Bisignano emphasized the importance of these alerts in connecting the IRS with individuals who can provide credible information. The program has already brought in over $7 billion to the Treasury, and there is potential for more if fully utilized.
