ILO Urges Global Workforce Overhaul to Address AI and Climate Challenges
The International Labour Organization (ILO) has issued a call for a significant overhaul of global education and workforce policies in response to the rapid changes brought about by artificial intelligence, digital transformation, climate transition, and demographic shifts. In its report, 'Lifelong Learning and Skills for the Future,' the ILO emphasizes the need for expanded access to lifelong learning and modern skills development systems to prevent deepening inequality and social divides. The report highlights that only 16% of people aged 15 to 64 participated in structured training in the past year, with significant disparities between formal and informal workers. The ILO stresses the importance of socio-emotional skills, such as creativity and critical thinking, as automation takes over routine tasks. The report also notes the growing demand for green jobs and care workers, urging governments to prioritize lifelong learning as a core economic and social policy.
