University of Nottingham Study Finds Daily Fiber Supplement Reduces Knee Arthritis Pain
A clinical trial led by researchers at the University of Nottingham has found that a daily prebiotic fiber supplement, specifically inulin, can significantly reduce pain and improve physical function in individuals with knee osteoarthritis (OA). The study, published in the journal Nutrients, involved 117 adults with knee OA who were divided into groups receiving inulin, digital physiotherapy-supported exercise, both treatments, or a placebo. Results showed that inulin not only reduced knee pain but also improved grip strength and lowered pain sensitivity. The trial highlighted the potential of dietary fiber to support gut health and manage OA, a condition affecting millions worldwide. The study's lead author, Dr. Afroditi Kouraki, emphasized the ease of incorporating a fiber supplement into daily routines compared to exercise programs.
