Coast Guard Rescues 4 from Yacht in 12-Foot Waves off Long Island
A dramatic rescue operation unfolded off the coast of Long Island when a Coast Guard helicopter airlifted four individuals from a disabled yacht caught in 12-foot waves. The incident occurred on Saturday evening, approximately three miles southwest of Moriches Inlet in Suffolk County. The yacht, named 'Proudfoot', became stranded in rough seas, prompting local police and first responders to attempt a rescue. However, due to hazardous weather conditions, they were unable to reach the vessel. The Coast Guard initially dispatched a boat crew from Shinnecock, but worsening sea conditions forced them to return. Subsequently, an MH-60T Jayhawk helicopter from Coast Guard Air Station Cape Cod was deployed, successfully rescuing the stranded boaters by 9:42 p.m. The operation highlighted the importance of reliable communication and safety equipment, such as life jackets, according to Coast Guard Lt. Jonathan Roth.
