Omani Ministry Demands Immediate Action on Stranded Tanker to Prevent Ecological Disaster
The Omani Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology has issued a 24-hour ultimatum to the owners of the stranded Supermax tanker Caroline Bezengi, demanding its removal from rocks off the Hallaniyat Islands' coast. The vessel, flagged under Cameroon, has been abandoned since an explosion was reported on June 8. The tanker, associated with Russian state ship-owner Sovcomflot and sanctioned by the EU, UK, and US, was en route to India from Novorossiysk. The ship's deteriorating condition poses a significant risk of an oil spill, threatening the marine buffer zone and the Dhofar coastline. The Omani authorities have conducted surveys and identified a salvage plan, but legal challenges have stalled immediate action.
