Closure of Chicago National Archives Branch Raises Concerns Over Historical Access
The Chicago branch of the National Archives is set to close, as announced by the National Archives and Records Administration. This decision is part of a cost-cutting measure to reduce the agency's real estate portfolio. The facility, located on Pulaski Road, has been a repository for 140,000 cubic feet of records from 85 federal agencies since the 1950s. The closure will result in the relocation of these documents to other facilities, potentially making them less accessible to local researchers and the public. The Chicago Area Archivists group has expressed concern over the loss of access to these historical documents, which are crucial for both personal and academic research.
