IMF Warns Local Stablecoins May Boost Demand for Dollar-Backed Tokens
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has issued a warning that efforts to promote local-currency stablecoins in emerging markets could inadvertently increase demand for U.S. dollar-backed tokens. This is due to the deeper liquidity, stronger network effects, and wider acceptance of dollar stablecoins. The IMF highlights South Africa as an early example, where Rand-linked stablecoins have attracted less demand compared to dollar-based ones. The IMF suggests that simply creating a local stablecoin may not be sufficient to shift users away from dollar tokens. The report emphasizes the need for policymakers to focus on strengthening macroeconomic fundamentals and improving regulatory frameworks to manage the growing influence of stablecoins.
