NWS Confirms Multiple Tornadoes in NJ and NY After Severe Storms
The National Weather Service (NWS) has confirmed at least five tornadoes touched down in New Jersey and New York during severe storms on Tuesday, July 21, 2026. Survey teams from the NWS Mount Holly station are investigating areas in Morris County, including Stanhope and Parsippany-Troy Hills, as well as Sussex County. Tornadoes were also confirmed in Cape May, NJ, and Westchester County, NY. The Cape May tornado, classified as EF-0, began as a waterspout and briefly came ashore with peak winds of 60-70 mph. In Westchester County, an EF-0 tornado traveled from Purchase to Rye Brook with winds peaking at 85 mph. The NYC metro area was under a tornado watch for much of the afternoon and evening.
