EU Accuses Meta of Failing to Protect Minors on Facebook and Instagram
The European Union has accused Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, of failing to prevent underage users from accessing its platforms. According to the EU's executive branch, Meta lacks effective measures to stop children under 13 from signing up and is not adequately identifying and removing these accounts once they are created. The EU's Digital Services Act mandates that social media companies protect minors, and Meta's current practices are seen as insufficient. Meta has responded by stating that it has measures in place to detect and remove accounts of users under 13 and is committed to working with the European Commission to address these concerns. The company plans to announce additional measures soon.
