Two Fatalities Reported Amid High Rip Current Risk in Brunswick County
Two individuals tragically lost their lives on Sunday, August 2, 2026, after encountering difficulties in the ocean near the 1100 block of Ocean Boulevard West in Holden Beach, North Carolina. According to Holden Beach Police Chief Steven Barger, the pair were spotted in distress at approximately 9:43 a.m. Rescue personnel attempted to revive the individuals on the beach, but their efforts were unsuccessful. The National Weather Service in Wilmington had issued a 'high rip current risk' warning for coastal Brunswick County earlier that morning, which was in effect until 8 p.m. The exact circumstances leading to the incident remain unclear.
