U.S. Rep. Summer Lee Introduces Revitalizing America’s Schoolyards Act Following Pittsburgh Project
U.S. Rep. Summer Lee (D-Swissvale) has introduced the Revitalizing America’s Schoolyards Act in April, a bill designed to establish a grant program through the U.S. Department of Education. This legislation aims to support the transformation of schoolyards into green, community-centered spaces across the country. The inspiration for this bill came from a recent project at Pittsburgh Greenfield PreK-8, where a new community schoolyard was unveiled. This first phase of the school's playground facelift, which includes a new play structure, rubberized surface, and trees, was supported by a $400,000 federal grant. The Greenfield school was previously one of the few Pittsburgh Public school facilities without an outdoor playground, with students relying on a concrete parking lot and field for outdoor activities. The project's total cost is estimated at $600,000, with additional funding from the Heinz Endowments.
