George Hamilton Holmes III Passes Away at 85, Leaving Legacy in Education and Music
George Hamilton Holmes III, a lifelong lover of animals, music, and vintage cars, passed away peacefully at the age of 85 on July 17, 2026, after a prolonged battle with dementia. Born in Asheville, NC, Holmes spent his early years on a farm, which deeply influenced his appreciation for wildlife and agriculture. He served in the US Air Force and later pursued a career in education, notably at Washtenaw Community College in Ann Arbor, MI, where he was a pioneer in integrating technology into education. Holmes was also an avid musician, collecting and restoring instruments, and a fitness enthusiast. He is survived by his partner, sisters, children, and grandchildren. A celebration of his life is planned for later this year.
