First Place for Youth Leverages AI to Combat Staff Burnout and Enhance Capacity
First Place for Youth, a national nonprofit focused on education, employment, and housing for young people aging out of foster care or experiencing homelessness, has successfully implemented an AI tool to alleviate staff burnout. The organization participated in the Economic Mobility AI Accelerator, a three-month program designed for economic-mobility nonprofits. Through this program, First Place for Youth developed 'Note Ninja,' an AI tool that summarizes meeting notes with young people into a case-management framework, identifying key focus areas and next steps. An initial pilot with eight staff members showed a 100% decrease in administrative burden and reduced burnout, with 80% reporting more time for direct work with young people and no longer working overtime. The organization emphasizes that AI should augment, not replace, human roles, building on a decade of using predictive technology to track youth milestones.
