YouTube and California Governor's Office Tackle AI-Generated Misinformation
California Governor Gavin Newsom's office has been actively working with YouTube to address the proliferation of AI-generated videos spreading misinformation about the state. These videos, often sensational in nature, have falsely claimed that major companies are leaving California and that public services are in decline. The governor's team has identified and pushed for the removal of over 700 accounts since January, which were found to be violating YouTube's terms of service. These accounts were part of a broader trend of AI-generated content that misleads the public, particularly targeting Newsom, who is considered a potential presidential candidate for 2028. YouTube has implemented a 'likeness protection' program to help public figures, creators, and journalists protect their images from being used in deepfakes without permission.
