New York City Advances Madison Avenue Bus Lane Redesign to Improve Commutes
The New York City Department of Transportation (DOT) has commenced work on extending dedicated bus lanes along Madison Avenue, a project aimed at enhancing the commute for approximately 92,000 daily bus riders. The redesign will extend double bus lanes from 23rd to 42nd Streets, addressing congestion issues that have historically slowed bus speeds to as low as 4.5 miles per hour. This initiative, initially proposed in 2025, was delayed under former Mayor Eric Adams' administration but has been revived by current Mayor Zohran Mamdani. The project is part of a broader effort to improve public transportation infrastructure in the city, with similar initiatives underway in other areas such as Brooklyn's Linden Boulevard and Flatbush Avenue.
