Japan Emphasizes Combat Drones in Response to Regional Tensions
Japan has announced a strategic focus on developing combat drones as part of its defense strategy, in response to rising regional tensions and the evolving nature of warfare. The Japanese government, in a 598-page defense paper, identified China as its biggest strategic challenge, citing the increased presence of Chinese warships in the Pacific Ocean. The paper highlights the importance of adapting to new warfare technologies, such as drones and artificial intelligence, which have been effectively used in conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East. Japan is prioritizing the development of its own drones for coastal defense, alongside long-range missiles.
