Rare Blue Moon and Micromoon to Peak on May 31 in Florida
A rare astronomical event is set to occur on May 31, 2026, as a blue moon coincides with a micromoon. The blue moon, which is the second full moon in a single calendar month, will peak at 4:45 a.m. ET. This phenomenon happens approximately every two to three years, according to NASA. Adding to its rarity, the moon will also be at its farthest point from Earth, known as apogee, making it a micromoon. At this distance of 252,360 miles from Earth, the moon will appear about 12-14% smaller and 7% dimmer than an average full moon. While the event will be visible across Florida, cloud cover may obscure views in some areas, particularly in North and South Florida. Residents in Central Florida and the Panhandle may have better chances of catching a glimpse if skies clear.
