San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie Faces Challenges with Unused Shelter Cabins Amidst Homelessness Crisis
Sixty city-owned shelter cabins in San Francisco's Bayview district have remained unused for nearly a year, despite Mayor Daniel Lurie's pledge to add 1,500 shelter and treatment beds within six months of taking office. The cabins were intended for a recovery site at 428 11th Street, but the plan was canceled after the city spent $219,000. Issues preventing the site's activation included potential power limitations requiring a Pacific Gas and Electric service upgrade, the landlord's demand for a firm three-year lease without a short-term exit clause, and the incompatibility of available state operating funds with the intended recovery programming. These cabins offer more privacy than traditional congregate shelters and are considered a valuable tool for addressing the intersection of addiction and homelessness, but they require suitable sites, adequate utilities, responsible lease terms, and operational funding.
