The Ivors Academy Advocates for Basic Income for the Arts and Launches New BBC Commissioning Guidelines
The Ivors Academy has announced its support for a Basic Income for the Arts, urging governments to explore guaranteed income for artists and creators to enhance financial security and career sustainability in the arts. This initiative is informed by Catherine Martin, Head of Policy at The Ivors Academy in Ireland and former Irish Minister for Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media, who previously oversaw Ireland’s Basic Income for the Arts pilot program. Concurrently, The Ivors Academy, in collaboration with the BBC and the Musicians’ Union, has launched new commissioning guidelines for media composers. These guidelines aim to establish fair standards, prioritize human creativity over generative AI, and promote clear negotiations for new commissions, favoring composers' publishing interests. The Academy also plans to hold its first Composer Week in November, including a Composer Summit and The Ivors Composer Awards, to support and connect composers across various genres.
