WHO Celebrates 25 Years of Research4Life, Enhancing Global Access to Scientific Knowledge
The World Health Organization (WHO) is marking the 25th anniversary of Research4Life, a public-private partnership that has significantly expanded access to scientific knowledge in over 120 countries. Initially launched in 2001 as a pilot initiative, Research4Life has grown into a major global movement, providing researchers, educators, health professionals, and policy-makers in low- and middle-income countries with affordable or free access to scientific publications. The program has increased research publishing by up to 75% and boosted participation in international clinical trials by more than 20%. It has also strengthened opportunities for women researchers, with publication rates increasing by up to 30% in countries facing the greatest barriers. Today, Research4Life collaborates with over 185 publishers and partner organizations, offering access to more than 250,000 journals, books, and databases.
