AI-Assisted Diagnostics Show Promise in Healthcare, Raising Ethical Concerns
Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming healthcare, particularly in diagnostics. AI tools are proving capable of scalable and cost-effective analysis of histopathological sections. In cervical cytology screening, deep learning-based AI systems have improved diagnostic accuracy. Dentistry is also seeing AI applications in oral and maxillofacial radiology, demonstrating high sensitivity and specificity in diagnosing dental issues, which could reduce clinician fatigue and diagnostic variability. AI is enhancing medical imaging by improving image quality, reducing noise, and automating workflows, thereby boosting diagnostic confidence. Medical students perceive AI as playing a crucial role in diagnostic imaging and decision-making. However, this rapid deployment of AI in healthcare also brings significant ethical dilemmas, including issues of privacy, data protection, algorithmic bias, transparency, accountability, and the balance between human judgment and machine decision-making. The World Healt...
