National Gallery of Art in Vilnius to Host Exhibition on Bauhaus Architect Vladas Švipas
The National Gallery of Art of the Lithuanian National Museum of Art (LNMA) in Vilnius is set to open an exhibition on October 9, 2026, celebrating the life and professional legacy of architect Vladas Švipas (1900–1965). The exhibition, titled 'Vladas Švipas: Pušalotas > Bauhaus > Kaunas > New York,' will trace the journey of the Lithuanian Bauhaus alumnus from interwar Kaunas, through a German Displaced Persons camp, and ultimately to New York, where he adapted to an émigré life. The display will run until January 17, 2027, in Room 5 of the National Gallery of Art. The exhibition aims to shed light on Švipas's contributions, particularly his role as a civil servant who promoted Bauhaus ideas in Lithuania's modernization programs and regional planning. An international symposium on the interwar relationship between the Bauhaus and the Baltics will precede the exhibition's opening, featuring presentations from Dr. Marija Drėmaitė, Dr. Anke Blümm, and Dr. Julia Secklehner.
