ACCT Philly Faces Overcrowding Crisis Amid Rising Pet Surrenders
ACCT Philly, the city's open-intake animal shelter, is experiencing a severe overcrowding crisis due to a significant increase in pet surrenders and a decline in adoptions. Executive Director Sarah Barnett reported that over 600 animals were brought to the shelter in a single week, marking the highest intake in over a decade. The shelter is now forced to house dogs in spaces not intended for kennels, with only two empty dog crates remaining. Financial hardships and a lack of affordable housing are cited as primary reasons for the increase in pet surrenders. The shelter is considering euthanasia as a last resort to make space for new arrivals.
